  • Santosh Gupta is a former Indian journalist, who worked as a news reporter for a local newspaper called ‘Dainik Navjyoti’ in Rajasthan. He came into limelight in 1992 after covering the Ajmer rape and blackmailing case, which was one of the most scandalous crimes in India.

But the public did not pay much attention to it until 15 May 1992, when they published a second report with blurred images of naked survivors. This revelation led to widespread outrage and a complete bandh in Ajmer on 18 May 1992 in protest against this horrific act.

  • In an interview, Santosh Gupta revealed how explicit photographs of the victims were made public, exposing the evil faces of Nafees Chishti and Farooq Chishti, the gang’s main leaders and former Indian youth politicians. According to Gupta, a man named Purshottam, who developed the film rolls, bragged about having indecent photos to his neighbor Devendra Jain, who was looking at a pornographic magazine. Devendra was concerned with Purushottam’s claim of even more explicit material, which he called “genuine material”. In response, Devendra made copies of the photographs and shared them with the local Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) group and the newspaper Dainik Navjyoti. After receiving the photographs, VHP workers handed them over to the police, leading to an official investigation into the matter.

    No one wanted to marry the girls of Ajmer. I used to get a lot of unwanted visitors in the 90s. People used to tell me about upcoming weddings and then show the picture of the bride. They used to ask me to tell whether she was one of them or not. He further added, “In the months after the story came out, if a girl died by suicide, it was assumed that she was a gang victim.”
